I adore everything written by Tomie dePaola, so I was really excited to see he has written a new picture book. Not only is it a new dePaola, but it's a Strega Nona book (who happens to be one of my favorite picture book characters of all time). In this outing, Strega Nona is planning a garden. And frankly, she has wonderful advice. She plans and lays her garden perfectly, with the help of Big Anthony and Bambolena. But, wouldn't you know it, Big Anthony thinks he knows better than Strega Nona. So what does he do? He plants his own haphazard garden behind the shed.
When Harvest time comes, they Strega Nona picks all her wonderfully grown vegetables, puts them in the root cellar, and is ready for the winter. But what does Big Anthony have? A jungle garden with nowhere to put his harvest! And to make matters more mysterious, who is putting vegetables on Strega Nona's doorstep in the middle of the night?
Wonderful addition to the Strega Nona lore. The illustrations are perfect dePaola. I adore the side by side comparison pictures of Big Anthony's garden and Strega Nona's garden. It is also fun to have learn the Italian names of the vegetables while the harvest grows.
